You crush your feet into sports shoes, kick them around, stub their toes, ignore their nails, and expect them to carry you around all day. No wonder they look a little worse for wear. Thankfully, there are plenty of simple, inexpensive tricks you can use to have your feet looking and feeling their best in no time at all.
If you’ve ever experienced the amazing feeling of having your feet taken care of—soaking, exfoliating, moisturizing, and maybe even getting a massage—you know how rejuvenating it can be. The best part is you can recreate this experience at home with only a small investment of time, money, and resources by following these steps.
Pedicure & Manicure:
- Remove any old nail polish with a cotton swab soaked in nail remover.
- Soak your feet in a tub of relaxing hot water. Add some bath or Epsom salts to enhance the experience. Soak for at least ten to fifteen minutes; the heat will promote blood circulation in your feet and soften your skin. Use this time to relax by reading, watching television, or simply leaning back and unwinding.
- After soaking, use a footstone to buff away dry skin, removing dead skin and softening your feet. Let each foot return to the water after you’ve finished.
- Use a foot scrub to further soften any rough spots, like your heels or the sides of your toes. Massage the scrub into your feet, then use a pumice stone to finish off any lingering rough skin. Take your time with this step, and if you have more dead skin, use the small brush provided. Rinse your feet when finished.
- Dry your feet carefully with a soft towel to avoid fungal and bacterial problems. Massage your feet with your favorite foot cream. Vaseline lotion may be particularly soothing and relaxing.
- After massaging, add some style to your nails. Trim and shape your nails with clippers and a file, then gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick. If you have a cuticle trimmer, you may want to remove excess cuticle skin, but be careful to avoid damaging the cuticle.
- Apply a clear or opaque base coat to hide any ridges or lumpy areas on your nails. When the base coat is dry, apply your favorite nail color.
- Clean up any messy areas as you go, using a nail color corrector or a small cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover to dissolve stains around the edges of your toenails. An additional coat of clear sealer will prevent chips and scuff marks from harming your pedicure masterpiece. That’s it! You’re ready to strap on a pair of open-toe sandals or pads around the house in your bare, very fashionable, flattering feet. Looking pretty is one element of great feet.
Note: Use daily foot cream and wear plastic socks at night to keep your feet soft and healthy and prevent dead skin buildup.
Warning: Use your own skin and nail tools; do not share tools with others, as it can lead to dangerous diseases.
